Corrections log
When an independent review finds an error, or a reader reports one, we fix it and record it here with the date.
These entries come from independent audits, where a reviewer who did not write a page re-read its sources. To report an error yourself, use contact. Our approach is on the editorial policy. Changes to register records are also in the register changelog.
- 29 September 2026: Who owns your VPN. We removed a claim that NordVPN and Surfshark sit under one holding company, because no source we read says it. The merger row now cites Surfshark's own post and the press release, which say the companies run separately and the terms were not disclosed. We softened wording that said Kape and Ziff Davis own some brands more strongly than the sources do, fixed a wrong confidence label on the Private Internet Access row, and marked the Kape delisting as reported because the exchange notice could not be opened.
- 29 September 2026: VPN audit tracker. We dated NordVPN's 2025 audit, corrected an IPVanish audit date that was the announcement date rather than completion (21 February 2025), added Surfshark's June 2025 audit, and reworded a count of audited providers because Mullvad's audit covers infrastructure.
- 29 September 2026: VPN incidents timeline. We corrected the IPVanish entry, which said data went to an IRC network; the source says it went to US investigators. It is now attributed to TorrentFreak's reading of court documents. We removed a statement about The Register's view of PureVPN that was not in the article, and dated the Windscribe Ukraine seizure to June and July 2021.
- 29 September 2026: VPN renewal prices. We corrected the page description from 15 VPNs to 14, added the currency each vendor page was showing, and caveated two prices we could not read directly on the vendor page.
- 29 September 2026: NordVPN and ExpressVPN reviews. We replaced a merger source we could not open, and disclosed that ExpressVPN's own pages disagree on whether its latest KPMG assessment is the second or the third.
- 29 September 2026: Surfshark and CyberGhost pricing. Both vendors show different price lists in euros and dollars, and we had presented one as a display quirk of the other. Both are real, so we now show both lists with currency and read date, and the register has a plan row for each.
- 29 September 2026: Mullvad review. We corrected "both 100% owned by its two founders" to the ownership chain Mullvad's about page describes, and removed a sentence about Mullvad's approach that was our inference.
- 29 September 2026: Private Internet Access review. We replaced a Wikipedia source for the Kape acquisition with Kape's own announcement, and corrected a line about location data: the page says email, payment details and a ZIP code are required for US tax, not that a general location is retained.
- 29 September 2026: IPVanish review. We added the policy's own line that connection time stamps are not retained, added the later operator's response to the 2016 summons coverage, and replaced an inferred US base with the address on the vendor's pages.
- 29 September 2026: Proton VPN review. We reworded "terms name Switzerland as the base" to what the terms say (Swiss governing law for non-US users). The price stays unquoted because no readable official Proton page carried a VPN price.
- 29 September 2026: Best VPN for privacy. The exclusion list did not follow the page's own criteria: IPVanish was excluded on a test that is not a criterion, and Surfshark on a criterion its public reports meet. Each exclusion now names the criterion and source and states that it is not a finding about logging.
- 29 September 2026: Cheap VPNs and free VPN safety. We corrected a PrivateVPN renewal, widened a stated price range because one provider fell outside it, and fixed the free-VPN study summary: a claim about injected JavaScript was in no source and a claim about free and paid apps was unsupported, so both were reworded. The Hola and UFO VPN statements now match their sources.
- 29 September 2026: VPN jurisdiction explained. We added that the Nine and Fourteen Eyes alliances have no published membership list, and aligned the incident table with the wording on the incidents timeline.
- 29 September 2026: Best VPN for Netflix. We removed a sentence saying Netflix does not want VPN connections, which was our inference, and kept to what its error message says. A claim about free plans now says it rests on Proton alone.
Checks that found no error are not listed. The refund-policy comparison and the torrenting guide were re-read against their sources and passed without change.
