VPN for Netflix, What Netflix and the Vendors Say

Published By VPNInfobase editorial

Compiled from providers' published information and public documentation.

No VPN we can cite promises Netflix access, and its Help Centre error message tells users to switch VPNs off. Netflix says: “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” Vendors sell streaming as a feature but their own terms, where we read them, make no guarantee. We do not name a “best VPN for Netflix”, because that would need a running test we have not done and a result that would change within days. What we can give is the documented position of each side.

What Netflix says

From Netflix’s Help Centre, read 29 September 2026: VPN apps “can make your device or network look like it’s connecting from somewhere other than your physical location”. Netflix also says VPNs “aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience”. Its advice is to turn off the VPN if you see the error, and to check your apparent location on fast.com.

What the vendors say

ProviderStreaming statement on its own pagesGuarantee of access?
Proton VPN“Streaming is available on all paid Proton VPN plans”; it lists over 200 platforms including Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video; free plan must upgrade“Does not guarantee streaming access”; Secure Core servers “do not always support streaming”; “should not be used to evade copyright regulations”
SurfsharkTerms do not address streaming; service is provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE”“Actual service coverage, speeds, locations and quality may vary”
ExpressVPNTerms have no streaming clause; partner services are governed by their own termsThe terms say its services “may be subject to unavailability for a variety of factors beyond our control”; a separate page says it is not for copyright circumvention

Not read: NordVPN (pages blocked to our reader) and other vendors. Each row is what the vendor’s page says, not what we found by connecting.

How to use this

  • Expect it to fail sometimes. Netflix’s message and the vendors’ “as available” wording both point that way. Buying on the strength of one review site’s claim is the riskier reading.
  • Use the refund window as your test. A 30-day money-back window lets you try the service on your own connection; refund policies compared has conditions per vendor, including that renewals are usually excluded.
  • Check whether the terms carve out streaming. The Proton wording above is the plainest.
  • Free plans may leave it out. Proton says free users must upgrade to stream; other vendors were not read. Are free VPNs safe covers the trade-offs.
  • Price is the other half. See best cheap VPNs for the lowest published plans and what you really pay for renewals.

Method

Researched from Netflix’s Help Centre and the vendors’ own pages on 29 September 2026; wording in quotation marks is theirs. We cite no speed or unblocking results and have not run any. Streaming availability changes without notice. NordVPN is the one provider we earn commission on (disclosure). Reviewed every 90 days. Update log

  1. Page rewritten. The ranking of VPNs that "reliably" unblock Netflix, the step-by-step and the speed headroom claim had no source and were removed. Replaced with Netflix's own statement and the vendors' own streaming terms.
